Symptoms:
|
Having been diagnosed with Crohn's disease in his teens, colon
surgery for unusual cells in his early thirties followed by
several surgeries for incisional hernias the patient thought
nothing of having more than ten bowel movements per day. With
a high fever he took himself to the ER where a CT scan revealed
abnormalities in his colon and liver and recommended he undergo
a colonoscopy. So two years after receiving a clean bill of
health form a prior colonoscopy this colonoscopy revealed a
tumor so large that it was essentially causing blockage and
required a stint.

Diagnosis:
|
Stage 4 Colon Cancer
|
|
Treatment:
|
The patient underwent three months of chemotherapy (with blood
transfusions) followed by back-to-back surgeries, the first to
remove the tumor in the colon and the second to both remove
three tumors from the salvageable part of the liver and cut off
the blood supply to the inoperable part of the containing nine
tumors. Follow up testing revealed no evidence of cancer.
Given his history he underwent an additional six months of
chemotherapy. Unfortunately, after completing the chemotherapy
the cancer returned with thirteen new tumors.

|
Prognosis:
|
Sadly, the patient passed away from colon cancer a few months
later.
