Colon Cancer Diagnosis At Age 40-49 - Story 001

Symptoms:
|
Experienced loose stools and diarrhea for approximately three months
which the patient attributed to medication with these symptoms as
known side effects. Patient then noticed blood in the stool. The
patient reported this to his Primary Care Physician who scheduled an
appointment for a colonoscopy to be performed by a gastroenterologist.
Although the patient and both physicians thought they would likely
find the cause of the blood to be hemorrhoids the gastroenterologist
found a large mass during the colonoscopy.

Diagnosis:
|
Stage 3 Colon Cancer
|

Treatment:
|
The patient underwent a hemicolectomy followed by six months of
chemotherapy.
|
|
Prognosis:
|
There is no evidence of cancer seven years after the initial
diagnosis. The patient undergoes yearly colonoscopies and blood
work as follow up.
