Symptoms:
|
Although as far back as she can remember the patient experienced
abnormal bowel movements and had blood in her stool the critical
moment for her came when, at only 14 years of age, she had
excruciating abdominal cramps and threw up blood. This was
followed by the involuntary release of what she described as a
"burning liquid" pass through her rectum covered in a large pool
of blood. She did not tell her parents or see a doctor. A year
later she started missing school with regular bouts of vomiting
and bloody mucous covered diarrhea. She continued to be too
embarrassed to talk about her symptoms. By the time she turned
16 she was seeing what she described as "white chunks" along with
the blood. When the pain finally became too great she told her
mother and had a bowel movement right after telling her. When
her mother saw the large amount of blood she immediately took her
to a doctor. The doctor had her admitted to the hospital. A
gastroenterologist diagnosed her with pan ulcerative colitis
without performing a colonoscopy. She lost twenty pounds.
Finally a different gastroenterologist diagnosed her.
